It is often said these days that values aren’t what they used to be. As a society we have less time to spend with our children and less time to instill "good" values. This exercise is designed to provide you, the parent, with an opportunity to instill good values while finding out what your child feels are good values.* Make sure that both of you explain why you feel each is an important value.
PURPOSE: To learn about values through open discussion.
MATERIALS: Pencil, paper, and an open mind.
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Both you and your child should write 5 good values that you, feel are important (i.e. treating people with respect).
2. When complete, have your child share what he/she has written. During this portion it is important not to be judgmental. Be supportive of their ideas and redirect values that aren’t healthy. Once they are done, share your ideas with your child.
Remember: Setting "good" values at home is the basis for a quality community.
