Tobacco use is one of the biggest health concerns today. The HOME TEAM is a good opportunity for you to talk with your child about tobacco use. You have a real advantage if you are presently a smoker or used to be a tobacco user.
MATERIALS: None.
INSTRUCTIONS:
PURPOSE: To help children learn why people use tobacco.
1. Talk about some of the most common uses of tobacco. Smoking--cigarettes, pipes, cigars. chewing--plug tobacco. Dipping--snuff.
2. Explain that tobacco has nicotine, which is a stimulant. A stimulant is a drug that speeds up pur brains and nervous system.
3. Explain in a non-judgmental way that many people use tobacco for many reasons, but that tobacco use can cause diseases that make it hard to breath, can cause cancer of the mouth, and can even kill you. Ask, "why do you think any young person would smoke today?" Some answers might be:

*Adult role models or peer pressure can influence young people.
Smoking can become a habit - it’s something to do.
*
*People start and get hooked
4. Have your son or daughter complete only the statement that applies to them. Now you complete only the statement that applies to you.

People may believe smoking can stimulate their appetite, wake them up, and increase their energy level; or help them relax and reduce stress; opr decrease their appetites so they don’t gain weight.- they may have psychological and even physical dependence.
5. Praise your child for his/her thoughtful answer. If the first statement was chosen, talk about some alternatives to smoking like exercise or other more healthful forms of relaxation.
