Home Team -
Activities to develop youth and build strong families.
Back

One of the biggest changes in working with youth over the past fifteen years has been the obvious lack of respect that today’s youth show toward teachers, YMCA staff, police officers and their parents. This problem crosses all cultural and economic lines.

PURPOSE: To learn about respect. To learn reasons why people are respected and how to earn respect.

INSTRUCTIONS:

Remember: Treating other people with respect regardless of their shortcomings is a good way to earn respect.

NOTE: This is a good meal time discussion.

1. Help the children discuss the meaning of respect and agree on a definition.

2. Go around the table and have each person tell the name of a person they respect and reasons they respect them. Encourage the family to discuss the people and reasons. Some family members may have more than one name.

3. Ask the family members to think of things they can do to be respected by others, including family members. Discuss these answers.

4. Discuss the Golden Rule as a way of deciding how we treat people. (Treat other people as you would like them to treat  you.)
