To teach decision making skills.
MATERIALS: A pencil and paper may be helpful.
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Read the following story.
You are on a basketball team that will be playing for the city championship this week. If you win, you will get a big trophy, a championship T-shirt to wear to school and tickets to see the Chicago Bulls play basketball. Your picture would also be in the newspaper. The team you are playing against is very good. You and some other players on your team go to the gym to shoot baskets and you find a notebook that belongs to the other team’s coach. On the outside it says "GAME PLAN TO WIN THE CITY CHAMPIONSHIP." With the information inside you will know what the other team is going to do in the game and that would help you win. You would be the city champions. What would you do with the notebook?
2. With your child’s help, list different things that could be done. Examples:
Don’t touch the book, read the book carefully, throw it away, return it, etc.
3. Discuss each alternative on the list and what could happen with each choice.
4. Apply the Golden Rule by asking, "if you were the coach and you lost your notebook what would you want someone to do with it if they found it?" This is an excellent opportunity for you to discuss your values with your child.
5. Finish by praising your child for sharing ideas and thinking about doing the right thing.
Note: The YMCA recommends following the Golden Rule in decision making.
